Smooth is the design team of Cathy McQuade and Amanda Owens.
Back in the 80s the two girls met in the music industry, when Amanda booked Cathy’s band Deckchairs Overboard to play at her nightclub, the infamous 'Stranded'. Girls were not common in the industry in those days, and the two formed a kind of girl power alliance. It only came out years later that they were both born in the same remote part of North Wales.
Several years, and many bottles of champagne later, they hatched a plan to create a new fashion label, aimed at women, like themselves, who are creative and like to express this in their clothing. Smooth began in 2000 and was an immediate success. Customers showed a clear desire for clothing cut for women rather than girls. Their range developed to include many ‘plus size’ garments though it was never conceived this way. What became apparent was that there are many women over 40 whose bodies have changed, but cannot find interesting clothing which fits and flatters.
In 2015, the fashion capital of Australia beckoned and Smooth relocated to Melbourne's CBD. They are now in one of the iconic Melbourne laneways, where they have their design studio onsite, getting to experience firsthand the transformative power their designer clothing has on plus size and mature women.
Stepping into their spacious salon, you may be overwhelmed by the gorgeous fabrics. Amanda and Cathy are self-confessed ‘fabric tragics’, and simply can’t resist buying the most beautiful textiles they can find. These days they have moved into designing their own silks and silk velvets with overseas companies, but are committed to producing all their garments in Australia. In fact they still do most of the cutting themselves.
